Firming Up a Mucky Swim Area on Turk Lake in Greenville, Michigan

How do you fix a mucky swim area on a Michigan inland lake? On this Turk Lake property in Greenville, we laid geotextile fabric across the soft lake bottom, trucked in clean beach sand, and used the Sand-Pro System™ to spread it evenly over the fabric. Six hours on site, and no machine crossed the lawn.

The beach on this Turk Lake property was not unusable. It was soft. Somewhat mucky, the kind of bottom that needed to be improved and firmed up before summer so the family could swim, get boats in and out, and fish off the shoreline without sinking to their ankles on the way. That is one of the most common calls we get on Michigan inland lakes, and it is a very different job from building a beach where the bottom is already firm.

Where Is Turk Lake, and Why Does Muck Settle Along the Shoreline?

Turk Lake sits in Montcalm Township in Montcalm County, northeast of Greenville, and it is listed at roughly 151 acres. It shows up on the Michigan DNR inland lake maps for Montcalm County, and the lake is known for bluegill, largemouth bass, northern pike, rock bass, and yellow perch. Montcalm County also keeps a dedicated Turk Lake page with board contacts and meeting minutes, which is worth a bookmark if you own frontage here.

Muck on a lake like this is not dirt that washed in. It is organic material, decades of decaying weeds and leaf litter settling into the sheltered shallows where there is not enough wave action to move it along. That is why the swim area in front of a wooded, protected lot goes soft while the windward side of the same lake stays sandy.

How Do You Build a Firm Beach Over a Soft Lake Bottom?

Short answer: you do not fix muck by burying it in sand. Poured straight onto organic muck, sand disappears into it within a season or two, because muck has almost no bearing strength. The fabric is what makes the sand stay sand.

Geotextile fabric spreads the load of the sand across the whole soft area instead of letting it punch down in spots. It is breathable, so gas from the decomposing material underneath can rise through it instead of pushing sand loose, and it holds back the weeds that would otherwise root straight up through a fresh beach. That combination is the core of our weed and muck removal work on inland lakes.

Here is how the Turk Lake job ran:

  1. Fabric down first. The geotextile went over the swim area and was staked into position before a single grain of sand was placed. Skip this step on a mucky bottom and you are paying to sand the same beach again in a couple of years.
  2. Sand delivered by truck. Truckloads of clean beach sand came in and stayed up on the drive. Nothing heavy went near the shoreline.
  3. Sand-Pro System™ set up. The system pulls lake water up through the blue lines, mixes it with the sand at the machine, and pumps the slurry back down through the orange line to the water’s edge.
  4. Sand placed evenly over the fabric. Slurry lets the crew flow sand into place and level it rather than dumping and dragging it, which is what gives you a consistent depth instead of humps and thin spots.

The sand itself matters as much as the fabric. We use clean, locally sourced mason sand because it drains instead of holding water in mud pockets, and it is free of the fines that cloud the water. What the Homeowner Gets Out of It

The result on Turk Lake is a muck and weed free waterside beach the family can enjoy for many summers to come. Firm footing for kids walking out, a stable bottom for getting boats in and out and for setting a dock or hoist, and no more guessing what your foot is about to sink into. Six Hours, and the Lawn Never Saw a Machine

Start to finish, this one took about six hours. The trucks and the Sand-Pro System™ stay parked back on the drive, and the only thing that crosses the yard is hose. Lines lie on top of the grass, come up at the end of the day, and there are no ruts to fill, no tire tracks through the lawn, and no landscaping bill chasing the beach bill.

This is our second project on Turk Lake. Our first was a lake bottom beach sanding job on the other side of the lake, an 800 square foot beach done in three hours on a firm, flat bottom with a sand and pea stone slurry. Same lake, different bottom, different build. Farther north, we handled a heavier job at Evart, where the shoreline itself needed reconstruction along with the sanding.

What About Permits on a Michigan Inland Lake?

This is the part homeowners are most likely to get wrong. Placing sand above the water’s edge is one thing. Once fabric or sand goes below the ordinary high water mark on a Michigan inland lake, state environmental permitting generally comes into the picture, and that permitting timeline drives your schedule more than our calendar does. This Turk Lake project proceeded under an EGLE permit. If you are thinking about a beach for next season, start asking that question in the fall, not in June.
